Concern’s Annual Spring Run Needs Volunteers!

26 Mar

Concern Worldwide US, an international humanitarian agency committed to fighting extreme poverty around the world, needs over 200 volunteers to organize and help execute its annual SPRING RUN fundraising event. This 4 mile run/walk through Central Park will take place on Saturday, April 13th, at 9:30AM. All of the proceeds from the Spring Run will support Concern’s programs fighting extreme poverty in the 25 poorest countries in the world.

Each year, in preparation for the event, Concern relies on volunteers for a variety of promotional tasks, namely helping distribute posters and brochures to local businesses to spread awareness of the event. On the day of the run volunteers will also help in the setup and execution of the day’s events. Both individual volunteers and groups are welcome, but groups are preferred.

For information on how you can get involved, please write them at events.usa@concern.net or visit www.concernusa.org/springrun . You can also visit www.concernusa.org to learn more about the organization. It’s a great day outside and a wonderful way to give back!

Growing Pains

20 Mar

Hello readers,

You might have stumbled on this site through a google search, or perhaps you were trying to reach giveandgetevents.com and were re-directed here. In any case, welcome. Have a seat.

This site has been up for four years now and continues to prove itself as a solid resource for people looking to volunteer in New York City. Last year, I attempted a spin-off of sorts called Give & Get Events, which was dedicated solely to the sharing of non-profit events, fundraisers, and group projects. And in keeping with the tradition of spin-offs, it didn’t really work out so well. It split my readership and just generally didn’t function as well as I wanted it to. I was disappointed but it was a learning experience that will ultimately benefit you all- my readers!

For that reason, I’ve decided to reassess and rebuild Give & Get NYC. In a few short weeks, you’ll be seeing a new site that will include the best of both worlds: that wacky spin-off character you loved (G&G Events) will play a bigger role-with all your favorite characters from the original G&G NYC- and end it’s solo career. The “Spotlight Series” of interviews, non-profit highlights, and event reviews will continue to add depth to the site, and an events calendar on the front page will be chock full of do-good fun times submitted by NYC non-profits themselves.

I’m sorry I strayed, but I hope you’ll stick around to see the final product. In the meantime, a less-cool-but-still-totally-functional event calendar has been added to the sidebar on the right so that no one missed out on the spring gardening projects, fundraisers, and volunteer opportunities. Please email giveandgetnyc@gmail.com to add events, get in touch, offer words of wisdom, support, or ask questions.

My Best,

Rachel

2013

On March 5th, Mae’s Breath Foundation & Fashion Emerge will host the one year anniversary of the newly formed Mae’s Breath Foundation, which began in memory of Brooklyn resident Eartha Mae Lawson, who lost her brief battle with lung cancer in 2010. The evening festivities will include showcasing MBF’s on-line support group, as well as an introduction of the creative arts series which will promote lung cancer awareness.

Mae’s Breath is currently seeking volunteers to assist at this event and help ensure that it runs smoothly. Volunteers will be asked to greet guests and press, distribute giftbags, and assist with model preparation before the showcase begins. “The Go Project is a nonprofit organization serving public school children in lower Manhattan who are struggling academically. We offer academic, emotional and social support to ensure they gain the confidence to excel and matriculate. We are trying to close the achievement gap by offering several programs and support, a summer intensive 5 week, a Saturday program that depends on our amazing volunteers who assist a teacher in a lesson by allowing each student to get more one on one time and their questions answered in smaller group settings,  and social development.

Our community charity partner, Strand has collaborated with us on a newly finished Mural that may be viewed on the side of the Strand Building.”

Interested volunteers should email their contact information and desired 4-hour volunteer time slot from the list above to Olivia Nunez at onunez@goprojectnyc.org
