ICSF Valentine’s Party

The Inner-City Scholarship Fund Junior Committee is having its annual Valentine’s-themed party for the 1st to 3rd grade kids of St. Ann School in East Harlem on Saturday, February 11, from 11:30pm to 2:30pm. There will be arts and crafts amidst the Valentines decorations, as well as pizza and soda! There may even be a Cupid sighting complete with diapers and a bow and arrow, though you didn’t hear that from me.

If you’re interested in volunteering your time and good vibrations, please contact Jonathan ( jcrisol@deloitte.com ) or Kurt ( Kurt.Spielmann@marsh.com ). They’ll get you on the list and send out more details before Saturday.

Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue Event

The Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue is composed of a network of fosters and volunteers who work together to rescue dogs from high-kill, rural shelters in the south. That IS pretty badass.  And tomorrow night, January 25th, you can help them raise money so they can save even more dogs! You can contribute by playing $1 skeeball, $5 bingo, and drinking $5 fancy fundraisin’ dranks. There will also be prizes from Mast Brothers chocolate, PS 9 Pets, Evermore pet food and more! If you’re anywhere near Williamsburg tomorrow, this is sure to be a fun-filled event at Full Circle Bar worth checking out!

About the rescue: Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue is composed of a network of fosters and volunteers who work together to rescue sweet, loving, adoptable dogs from high kill, rural shelters in the south. Every single dog we rescue would have been killed if not for us stepping in to save them – sometimes just hours before they are scheduled to be killed. In 2011, our small but mighty group rescued over 80 dogs from death row and placed them in stable, loving homes. City Harvest and GrowNYC Join Forces for Food Drive

Attention Upper West Siders: Were you thinking about making a donation this holiday season and just haven’t gotten around to it? Well, have no fear because City Harvest and GrowNYC are making is easier than ever to donate fresh food this year.

Sunday December 18th, head over to the 79th st Greenmarket on Columbus Avenue. City Harvest will have a table set up to collect donations of fresh food from the market to help feed the hungry this holiday season. All you have to do is purchase some amazing fresh food, as you would for yourself, and bring it to the CH table on 79th Street on your way out.

Sounds easy? That’s because it is!

NYCreates Holiday Craft Fair

“Over 40 Fine Craft Artisans at the NYCreates Holiday Craft Fair”

NYCreates is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair featuring over 40 of New York’s fine, handmade craft artisans.  The 3-day event is being held at the West-Park Church/Center at 86th St. and Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side Friday, December 16 through Sunday, December 18, 2011.

The NYCreates Holiday Market makes it easy to give beautiful, high quality, handmade gifts for the holidays. And now more than ever, it is important to support local businesses like these artisan entrepreneurs.

This event offers neighbors and visitors the chance to shop for unique and desirable holiday gifts directly from the artists who make them.  Clothing designer Catherine Joseph makes distinctive men’s and women’s clothing and counts Tommy Mottola and George Lopez among her clients.  Jewelry Designer Amy Burchanal of House of Z Jewelry creates earrings, necklaces, and bracelets from real sea glass collected on the shores of New York State.  Sandra Armstrong of Gifted Papers creates whimsical clocks, boxes, and journals from handmade paper.  These fine artisans and many more will be showing their work at the NYCreates Holiday Craft Fair.

NYCreates is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting handmade craft artists in New York City by sponsoring events, such as craft fairs, as well as providing training and microfinancing.  “Crafts are a vital part of the creative character of the city, and of the economy as well.” says Ted Berger, Executive Director of NYCreates.  “Often these artisan entrepreneurs go under recognized. Their talent, passion, and dedication is clear in the quality and diversity of the objects they make.”  This event is sponsored by the Business Center for New Americans (BCNA) and the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA).

Soccer for Harmony

Do you think every child should get to play organized soccer? You can make that happen in central Brooklyn at the heart of the obesity epidemic for scores of children. Support the first-ever Crown Heights Soccer Eagles league by attending Soccer for Harmony on Sunday, December 18: a day of soccer, fun, healthy food and music. There will be a holliday flea market and cook-off featuring local chefs and artisans at PS 221, in addition to soccer games for both adults and children!

The event honors Christopher Rose, a promising child stabbed to death at the age of 15 in 2005 when a gang of youth tried to steal his friend’s iPod. We honor his memory and others like him who died too young from violence. This is a very special event to prevent more sad stories like Christopher’s.

Seeds in the Middle and Hip2B Healthy was founded in the fall of 2009 under the pretense that there were limited opportunities for neighborhood youth to play organized sports in Crown Heights, or or affordable ones at that. Public funding had dried up and parents were working hard just to make ends meet. They worried constantly about the lack of activities and safety of their children. “Seeds” programs are now making healthy choices easy, accessible and affordable to all.

The first-ever Crown Heights youth soccer program – for all children – also started in fall 2009. Since it’s inception, they have engaged more than 500 players, ages 4-14, and parents for up to 3 days a week at low cost or, for those in need, for free. Now in training are the first team members of the Crown Heights Soccer Eagles  – under the leadership of former professional player, Joe Cabral, of Sporting Lisbon (Portugal), who trained at the same academy as Cristiano Ronaldo, Figo and Nani. Indoor programs start in December and they are planning to have a full program for the spring.

I will be posting as more details arise, but Seeds in the Middle will be looking to include a number of people in this event:

-Local Artisans: Show Crown Heights what you have to offer!

-Chefs: Support Seeds programming and show off your cooking at the tasting tables!

-Soccer players: Sign up to play in this one-day tournament! Groups will be split by age/gender.

-Sponsors: There are a number of opportunities for sponsorship on banners, t-shirts, the Seeds website, and more.
